What is compensated coarctation of the aorta?
The blood flow above the coarctation is the same as blood flow below the coarctation; vascular resistance above the coarctation is increased and vascular resistance below the coarctation is unchanged.
Epithelioid histiocytes?
Sarcoidosis.
How is the metastatic potential of carcinoid tumor judged?
By size and location. A carcinoid tumor located in the appendix and cecum spreads to the liver; carcinoid tumors of the stomach, ileum and colon have the highest metastatic potential.
What is thiazolidinedione?
Thiazolidinedione is a glitazone used to treat diabetes mellitus type 2.
What type of kidney stones form in cystinuria?
Yellow-brown hexagonal crystals; x-ray shows radiopaque staghorn calculi of both renal pelvises. Cystinuria is confirmed by nitroprusside cyanide test.
What is an atonic seizure?
This is a "drop" seizure characterized by sudden loss of muscle tone. The patient falls to the ground and may get injured.
Which seizures occur in children?
Absence and tonic seizures.
What is the mechanism of action of hammerhead ribozymes?
Hammerhead ribozymes catalyze the sequence-specific cleavage of RNA phosphodiester bonds, and could be used to treat ALS through ribozyme-mediated degradation of mutant SOD1 mRNA.
If a patient has symptoms of acute cholecystitis and is jaundiced, where is the gallstone lodged?
Common bile duct.
