What are some findings in Zenker's diverticulum?
Regurgitation of food, pain in the neck with swallowing, bad breath, and change in voice.
What type of mutation causes Tay-Sachs disease?
Frameshift mutation.
What do ACE inhibitors do to serum potassium levels?
Hyperkalemia.
What are the similarities between HPV infection and retinoblastoma?
They both suppress cellular anti-oncogenes that normally suppress tumor development.
Splenectomy can result in infection by what organisms?
Encapsulated organisms like S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and N. meningitidis.
Superior Sagittal Sinus:

What is the green arrow pointing to?
Superior sagittal sinus; thrombosis of the superior sagittal sinus often occurs in pregnancy. Findings include headache and seizures.
In coarctation of the aorta, how is blood supplied to the first intercostal space?
Anterograde flow through the intercostal artery via the subclavian artery. There is decreased blood flow in the descending aorta and increased flow in the subclavian artery.
Tight Junctions:

ABOVE: tight junctions (zona occludens).
In type 1 diabetes, insulin and glucagon responses to hypoglycemia are absent. So what would be the main counterregulatory response to restore blood glucose levels in type 1 diabetes patients suffering from hypoglycemia?
Increased epinephrine secretion. Epinephrine stimulates hepatic glycogenolysis via adrenergic beta-2 receptors. Epinephrine also stimulates muscular glycogenolysis.
What are some findings in Mallory-Weiss tear?
Vomiting blood (hematemesis).
What kind of encephalitis can herpes simplex virus cause?
Volume loss can result in the temporal and frontal lobes; there can be necrotizing, hemorrhagic acute encephalitis that can produce death.
