How does potassium iodide protect against radiation-associated thyroid cancer?

Radiation-associated thyroid cancer occurs when radioactive iodide is absorbed by the thyroid gland. Cold potassium iodide is administered before exposure to radiation. The unlabelled thyroid is taken up by the gland and the gland is quickly saturated with unlabelled iodide, thus, acting as a competitive antagonist of radioactive iodide.

How do the carotid sinus and aortic arch baroreceptors work?

CN IX and CN X carry afferent information to the medulla from the carotid sinus and aortic arch baroreceptors, respectively. The firing rate of these neurons increases with increasing blood pressure. However, if the CN IX and CN X are accidently removed due to a surgical error, the medulla will sense no blood pressure at all and elicit a baroreceptor reflex resulting in an increased sympathetic outflow causing tachycardia and hypertension.
