Mild intermittent | less than or equal to 2 per week | less than 2 per month | FEV1 or PEF greater than 80%; variability less than 20% | short acting beta agonists as needed |
Mild persistent | greater than 2 per week | greater than 2 per month | FEV1 or PEF greater than 80%; variability 20-30% | add inhaled corticosteroid or cromolyn (children) |
Moderate | daily | greater than 1 per week | FEV1 or PEF 60-80%; variability less than 30% | long acting beta agonists |
Severe | continuous and daily | frequent | FEV1 or PEF less than 60%; variability greater than 30% | oral corticosteroids and/or leukotriene modifiers |
