What is HMT?
HMT stands for Hindustan Machine Tools. HMT is an India-based company which specializes in manufacturing heavy industrial machinery like diesel engines and farming equipment. This beautiful HMT Janata is a mechanical watch completely made in-house in India. "Janata" in Hindi means people.
Quick Review:
I ordered this watch from ebay.com; it was shipped from Mumbai and reached Chicago in about five weeks. I replaced the original black faux leather strap with a brown leather NATO strap. This is a hand-wound watch, i.e., it needs to be wound by hand every day, and fifteen to twenty crown rotations would suffice to keep the watch running for 24 hours.
The watch has 17 jewels and is not water-proof. Furthermore, it is a fairly light-weight compared to today's standards. In summary: The HMT Janata "Hindi dial" watch is a very simple and humble watch, and is extremely rare to find in stores in India. It can only be found for sale on ebay or online forums, when a lone seller occasionally puts up one for sale.

• Model: HMT Janata "Art Deco", WF-5 production.
• Lug size: 18 mm.
• Movement: HMT-0231 (based on Miyota Citizen's 0201 caliber from the 1960s).
• Crystal: Acrylic Domed.
• Case: All Stainless steel case, polished case sides.
• Dimensions: 35 mm diameter, 11 mm high.
• Not water-proof.
• Price: USD $30
• Hindi inscription @ 11 o' clock: "Janata."
• Hindi inscription @ 5 o' clock: "para shock" and "17 jewels."
• Hindi inscription @ 6 o' clock: "Made in India" followed by "0231." 0231 is the calibre used in the watch.
• Made in India. The movement is also made in-house by HMT-India.
