Recombinant DNA technology allows DNA fragments to be inserted into a nucleic acid vector that can replicate autonomously within microorganisms.
Uses: carrier detection, prenatal diagnosis of genetic diseases, gene therapy, and production of a specific protein, eg., insulin.

Chromosomes are cut with restriction endonucleases to produce restriction fragments.
Restriction endonucleases (eg., EcoRI, HaeIII) cut dsDNA at palindromes.
