Types of Seizures:

Type Description Drug of choice
Partial
Simple partial Involves one part of the body; there is no confusion and no loss of consciousness Carbamazepine
Complex partial Most likely involves the temporal lobe resulting in mood changes, hallucinations, illusions Carbamazepine
Generalized
Tonic-clonic Tonic extension of all extremities, followed by clonic rhythmic movements; loss of consciousness and confusion present Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Valproate
Myoclonic Brief arrhythmic movements lasting for less than 1 second; occur in clusters; no loss of consciousness; usually occur in the mornings; precipitated by sleep deprivation and stress Valproic acid
Absense Brief staring episode without loss of consciousness Ethosuximide, Valproate
