What is a Heat Stroke?

Heat strokes are characterized as exertional and nonexertional. Signs and symptoms of heat strokes include temperature greater than 105 F, altered mental status, hypotension, tachycardia, and tachypnea. Patients may have moist or dry skin.

Exertional Heat Stroke:

Occurs in healthy individuals undergoing conditioning in extreme heat and humidity; occurs due to thermoregulation failure.

Nonexertional Heat Stroke:

Occurs in patients with chronic medical conditions because they cannot remove themselves from the inciting stimulus and/or have impaired thermoregulation due to medications or underlined illness.
