Notes on Peripheral Nervous System
Postganglionic Sympathetic Neurons:
• Postganglionic sympathetic neurons arise from Chromaffin cells.
Neuropore Anomalies:
Rostral Neuropore Fails to Close:
• Anencephaly, polyhydraminos; increased AFP.
Caudal Neuropore Fails to Close:
• Spina bifidia; increased AFP.
Down syndrome:
• Reduced AFP.
Autonomic Nervous System:
• Innervates motor of smooth, cardiac, and glands.
• Two divisions: sympathetic (thoracolumbar) and parasympathetic (craniosacral).
Sympathetic:
• Smooth and cardiac, glands, thoracic viscera, foregut and midgut, pelvic viscera, and hindgut.
Parasympathetic:
• Glands and smooth muscle of head, viscera of neck, thorax, foregut, midgut, hindgut, and pelvic viscera of bladder and erectile tissue.
