Video and Description of Rinne Hearing Test:

Done by placing a vibrating tuning fork on the patient's mastoid bone until the patient indicates that they can no longer hear it. The still-vibrating tuning form is then quickly moved outside the external auditory meatus and held until the patient cannot hear the sound anymore.

Air-conducted sound should be heard twice as long as bone-conducted sound and is a positive (normal) Rinne test.

If the patient hears the vibration longer on the mastoid, this is known as a negative (abnormal) Rinne test where bone-conducted sound is heard longer than air-conducted sound. An abnormal Rinne test suggests conductive hearing loss (eg., due to otosclerosis in young adults).
