Genus: Actinomyces.

• Gram +; anaerobic; not acid fast.

Actinomyces Israelii.

• Found in normal flora, gingival crevices, and female genital tract.

• Endogenous transmission.

Pathogenesis:

• Invasive growth in tissues that lack oxygen supply.

Disease:

• Actinomycosis: very invasive, swelling, draining abscesses, sulfur granules.

Forms:

• Cervicofacial (due to dental trauma or poor oral hygiene) and pelvic.

Treatment:

• Ampicillin or penicillin G with surgical drainage.
