Diagram ECF and ICF volumes:

ecf icf volumes

From the above diagram:

The body consists of two compartments - ICF and ECF. The capillary membrane is permeable to sodium and the cell membrane is not permeable to sodium. Fluid volumes change horizontally and fluid osmolarities change vertically. For example, during prolonged sweating, there would be a decrease in ECF volume. Furthermore, in prolonged sweating, more water is lost than salt, so ECF osmolarity increases. Since water moves from low to high osmolarity, water will move from ICF to the ECF.
