Tumors and Anti-tumor Mechanisms:
• Tumor cells are weakly immunogenic.
• Anti-tumor mechanisms: Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes, antibodies, macrophages, NK cells.
Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes:
• Major anti-tumor cells.
• Perform surveillance by recognizing molecules presented by MHC I.
Secondary Response to Tumors:
• Antibody-mediated killing.
Tumor cells escape destruction by:
• Decreasing MHC expression.
• Antigen-loss variants.
• TGF-beta inhibition of effector functions.
• FasL induced apoptosis.
• Tolerance of TCR.
• Antigens masked by mucopolysaccharides.
