Genus: Brucella.

• Gram -; zoonotic, facultative intracellular pathogen.

• Found in domestic livestock.

Transmission:

• Unpasteurized dairy products; direct contact with infected animal.

Pathogenesis:

• Endotoxin.

• Facultative intracellular pathogen causes septicemia.

• Granulomatous response with necrosis.

Disease:

• Brucellosis (undulant fever).

• Acute septicemias: undulant and chronic forms.

Prevention:

• Pasteurize milk; vaccinate cattle.
