Notes on Bacillus
Genus: Bacillus.
• Gram +; spore forming; aerobic.
B. anthracis.
• Capsule is polypeptide (poly-D-glutamate).
• Found in animals, skins, and soil.
• Transmission: inhalation of spores or contact with infected animal.
Pathogenesis:
• Capsule inhibits phagocytosis.
Anthrax toxin:
Three protein parts:
• Protective antigen: mediates LF/EF entry.
• Lethal factor: kills cells.
• Edema factor: is an adenylate cyclase.
Diseases:
• Anthrax, cutaneous anthrax and pulmonary anthrax (Wool Sorter's Disease).
Treatment: ciprofloxacin or doxycycline.
• Vaccinations available.
B. cereus.
• Spores cause food poisioning.
• Emetic toxin (fast): diarrhea and vomiting.
• Diarrheal toxin (slow): watery diarrhea.
