Genus: Pseudomonas.

• Gram -, oxidase positive aerobic rod.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa:

• Pigments: pyocyanin (bluegreen), florescence.

• Grape-like odor.

• Non-lactose fermenting on EMB or MacConkey.

• Causes: Hot tub folliculitis, infection in burn patients, UTIs in patients with catheters.

Habitat:

• Present in water.

Transmitted by:

• Water aerosols, raw vegetables, flowers.

Pathogenesis:

• Endotoxin: inflammation in tissues and G- shock in septicemia.

• P. exotoxin A: ADP ribosylates EF-2 inhibiting protein synthesis.

• Capsule is antiphagocytic.

Infects:

• Burn patients, neutropenic patients, CGD patients, CF patients, catheterized patients.

Treatment:

• Antipseudomonal penicillin; 3D cephalosporins.

Prevention:

• No flowers/vegetables in burn units; pasteurization of water-related equipment.
