Genus: Proteus.

• Gram - rod; flagella; enterobacteriacea; non-lactose fermenting; urease positive.

Proteus mirabilis and Proteus vulgaris.

• Highly motile; swarms on blood agar.

• Urease produced.

• Found in human colon, water and soil.

Diseases:

• UTIs and septicemia.

Pathogenesis:

• Urease increases urine pH to cause kidney stones.

• Motility aids bladder entry.

Treatment:

• Do susceptibilities.
