Genus: Yersinia.
• Oxidase negative enterobacteriaceae; Gram - rod.

Y. pestis.
• Facultative intracellular parasite.
• Coagulase +.
• Found in southwest desert: rodents, etc.
• Spread by flea bite and respiratory droplets.

Pathogenesis:
• Endotoxin and exotoxin.
• Antigens: V and W.
• Envelope F-1 inhibits phagocytosis.

Diseases:
• Bubonic plague: rapidly increasing fever, regional buboes, conjunctivitis.
• Pneumonia plague: very contagious.

Treatment:
• Streptomycin with tetracycline; strict quarantine.

Y. enterocolitica.
• Zoonotic; pork; unpasteurized milk.
• Enterotoxin; multiplies in cold.
• Babies: bloody and pus diarrhea.
• Children/young adults: pseudoappendicitis.
• Adults: enterocolitis.
• Blood transfusion infections.
