Genus: Klebsiella.

• Enterobacteriaceae; major capsule; Gram -.

Klebsiella pneumonia.

• G- rods with large polysaccharide capsule.

• Mucoid, lactose fermenting, MacConkey agar.

• Oxidase -.

• Found in human colon and upper respiratory tract.

• Endogenous transmission.

Pathogenesis:

• Capsule inhibits phagocytosis.

• Endotoxin: fever, inflammation, and septicemia.

Diseases:

Pneumonia:

• In patients with chronic lung disease, diabetes, or alcoholism.

• Abscesses; thick and bloody sputum not foul smelling.

• Catheter-related UTIs.

• Septicemia.

Treatment:

• Cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, and quinolones.
