Genus: Vibrio.
• Gram - ; flagella.
• Oxidase positive.
Vibrio cholerae:
• O139 produces cholera toxin.
• Shooting star motility.
• Oxidase-positive.
• Growth on TCBS.
• Found only in human colon.
• Fecal-oral spread.
Pathogenesis:
• Mucinase, motility, and toxin co-regulated pili Tcp aid in intestinal mucosal attachment.
• Cholera toxin: ADP ribosylates Gs alpha activating adenylate cyclase; increased cAMP; watery diarrhea.
Disease:
• Cholera: rice water stools; water loss; shock.
Treatment:
• Fluid and electrolyte replacement; doxycycline and ciprofloxacin.
Prevention:
• Use sanitation.
Vibrio parahaemolyticus.
• Undercooked sea food; abdominal pain; diarrhea.
Vibrio vulnificus.
• Oysters; cellulitis; gastroenteritis; septicemia.
